Review 1 - Advertisement / Promotional Design
Introduction
I choose the advertisement of Century Link - The Power to Connect. I chose this advertisement to review because when you first start watching it the screen is immediately split left and right with two different images. The video then proceeds with the two different views of the world and how things are different in different locations. On the left side there is life in the city with people moving around by either walking or on a bus with different locations you would find in the city. Then on the right side of the screen you have a more rural life, with dirt paths and bikes on what appears to be a farm. How in different places people's lives are different but they are intertwined, and how even though it's different it's still home to different people.
Message Communicated
The message that is being communicated is that Century Link has been helping people connect for over 80 years, and that how to is helping people all over the country. From coast to coast and in different places Century Link is there to help you. That no matter where you live they will give you the power to connect, and that no matter what type of home you live in they are going to be willing to help you. That there are lots of different places that people call home and that Century Link will be there to get you that connection. The message is direct they mention how much they have grown as a company and how they call different places home. The advertisement also mentions how much they believe in having the power to connect in both little towns and big cities.
Elements of Design
The sound element played a major role in communicate the message, the sound played lets the viewer know what Century Link believes in. Then there is also a song in the background with two people singing about how they call two different places home. There are also many colors in the video that contrast to each other and grab the readers attention. On the left side of the screen there are brighter colors to reflect the busier city life and on the right side of the screen there are more Earth colored tones to represent a farm life. Lighting also matters because it draws your attention to different places on the screen. On the left were sometimes more lights which represent the bright city lights while on the right side the light more relies on the sun. These things all contribute to proving that Century Link will help you no matter where you call home. it doesn't matter what you have access to and it you live a rural or urban life. Century Link believes in everyone having the opportunity to connect and they are willing to help everyone get a connection.
Conclusion
I feel that this advertisement is a good example of outstanding visual/audio communication because it draws the viewer in by having something interesting to watch. There is also a time in which things travel and transform between the sides of the screen. It seems like it would might be hard to do and since it was created so seamlessly it must have been pretty well done. There are lots of differences that made the advertisement interesting and fun to watch and it also made it somewhat unique. These things combined and added together create an advertisement that is interesting to watch as a viewer, and that communicated the point clearly and neatly.
